Dear Sister, I know that voice
It usually shows up right after you get excited about something.
You feel a nudge to start. A new idea. A class. A little business. A dream you tucked away while you raised everybody else. And before you can even finish the thought, the voice clears its throat.
You're too old for this. You don't understand computers. Everybody else is so far ahead. What will people think? You'll only embarrass yourself.
I'm here to tell you, with love and without apology: that voice has been lying to you. You are more capable than your fear wants you to believe.
Fear is a voice, not a verdict
Fear talks like it knows your future. It doesn't. It has never once seen what God has planned for you. All it can do is point at what went wrong before and call that your forecast.
And notice where fear did not come from:
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7, KJV)
Read that again, Sister. A sound mind. Not a mind that's past its prime. Not a mind that can't hold anything new. The same God who gave you that mind is not surprised by your age, your birth year or your laptop.
Feeling afraid doesn't mean you're incapable. It usually means you care. It means this matters to you. You can feel the fear and still take the step.
Your life is already the evidence
Fear would love for you to forget everything you've already walked through. So let's take inventory.
You have stretched a budget that didn't want to stretch. You have sat in waiting rooms and held your family together. You have learned new jobs, new cities, new roles, and new ways of living after loss. You figured out a smartphone, and you figured out video calls so you could see your people. Nobody handed you a manual for most of your life, and you learned it anyway.
That is not a woman who can't learn. That is a woman who has been learning for decades.
Scripture is full of people God used well past the age the world would have picked.
- Moses was fourscore years old when he stood before Pharaoh, and he had a long list of reasons why he wasn't the right one (Exodus 4:10, 7:7).
- Caleb was fourscore and five when he asked for his mountain (Joshua 14:10-12).
- Sarah laughed at the promise because of her age, and God kept it anyway (Genesis 18:12-14).
Your years are not a disqualification. They are your qualification. Wisdom takes time, and you have put in the time.
How to answer fear this week
You don't argue fear away. You walk past it, one small step at a time.
- Name it. Write down exactly what the voice keeps saying. Lies lose power in the light.
- Answer it with truth. Next to each lie, write what God says. Start with 2 Timothy 1:7.
- Remember your wins. List three hard things you've already learned or survived.
- Shrink the step. Not "start a business." Just "watch one video" or "read one chapter."
- Let yourself be a beginner. Clicking the wrong button won't break anything. You will ask questions, and that's allowed.
- Don't walk alone. Tell one sister what you're trying. Courage grows in company.
Small steps count. Heaven takes them seriously, even when the world doesn't:
"For who hath despised the day of small things?" (Zechariah 4:10, KJV)
You are not too late
Sister, you don't need to feel brave before you begin. Most of us feel brave after. So lift your chin and say it with me:
Fear may speak, but it does not get the final word. I have a sound mind. I can still learn. I am taking my next step.
If this spoke to you, share it with a sister who needs it today. And leave a comment below: what has fear been telling you that you're ready to stop believing?
With love and faith,
Sharon
