For the woman over 50 who sometimes wonders, "What if I had tried?"
Have you ever sat quietly, maybe with your morning coffee, and found yourself thinking about the life you could have had?
Not because you're ungrateful for the life you have now. But because somewhere along the way, there were dreams you put on hold, opportunities you walked away from, and chances you never took.
Maybe it was going back to school.
Maybe it was starting that business you kept talking about.
Maybe it was traveling, learning something new, pursuing a career, or finally doing something just for yourself.
And now, years later, you sometimes wonder:
"What if I had just believed in myself a little more?"
Sis, if you've ever felt that way, you're not alone.
Sometimes We Regret the Things We Never Tried
There's something about getting older that makes you look at life differently.
In our 20s and 30s, we often believe we have all the time in the world.
We tell ourselves, "I'll do it when the children are older."
"I'll start when I have more money."
"I'll pursue that dream when life settles down."
But life has a funny way of staying busy, doesn't it?
One responsibility turns into another. The years pass. And before we know it, we're in our 50s or 60s, looking back at the woman we used to be.
The woman who had big dreams.
The woman who wanted more for herself.
The woman who sometimes allowed fear, insecurity, or other people's opinions to make her play small.
And perhaps the hardest part is realizing that we weren't always waiting for the right opportunity.
Sometimes, we were waiting to feel worthy of it.
But Here's Something I've Come to Understand
We cannot judge our younger selves with the wisdom we have today.
Read that again.
The woman you were at 25 didn't know what you know at 55.
She was doing her best with the knowledge, confidence, resources, and circumstances she had at the time.
Maybe she was raising children.
Maybe she was trying to keep a marriage together.
Maybe she was working a job that barely paid the bills.
Maybe she was so busy taking care of everyone else that she forgot she had dreams of her own.
So instead of being angry with that younger version of yourself, show her some compassion.
She survived things you rarely talk about.
She made sacrifices that nobody noticed.
And she helped you become the woman you are today.
You may have missed some opportunities, but you have also gained wisdom that money cannot buy.
God Has Not Run Out of Plans for Your Life
One of my favorite reminders comes from Jeremiah 29:11:
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Those words were originally spoken to God's people during a difficult season of waiting, but they remind us of something beautiful about His faithfulness.
Our circumstances do not take God by surprise.
And our age does not limit His ability to work in our lives.
Look at Sarah. She experienced God's promise at an age when most people would have considered it impossible.
Look at Moses. He was 80 when God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
Their stories remind us that God's purposes are not restricted by the timelines we create for ourselves.
Maybe your journey hasn't looked the way you imagined.
Maybe some doors closed.
Maybe some opportunities are gone for good.
But that doesn't mean every door is closed.
God can still do something beautiful with the years you have ahead of you.
What If Your Next Chapter Is Different From Everything Before It?
Here's a question worth asking.
What if, instead of spending the next ten years regretting what you didn't do, you spent them discovering what you still can do?
What if you finally started writing that book?
What if you learned how to use technology instead of being intimidated by it?
What if you started a small online business, took a class, learned a language, or developed a skill you've always been curious about?
What if you gave yourself permission to be a beginner again?
You don't need to have everything figured out.
You don't need to compete with someone half your age.
And you certainly don't need everybody's approval.
You just need the courage to take one small step.
Because five years from now, you don't want to look back at this season and say, "I wish I had started when I was 55."
You want to be able to say, "I'm so glad I finally gave myself a chance."
Let Regret Teach You, Not Trap You
Regret can be painful, but it can also reveal what matters to us.
If you regret not pursuing your education, perhaps there's still something you're meant to learn.
If you regret not becoming financially independent sooner, perhaps this is your season to build new skills and make more intentional financial decisions.
If you regret spending years putting yourself last, perhaps it's time to establish healthier boundaries.
We can't rewrite yesterday.
But we can make different choices today.
And sometimes the most powerful thing a woman can do is stop waiting for permission to live the life God has placed on her heart.
A Gentle Reminder for the Woman Reading This
You are not too old.
You are not too late.
And you are not disqualified because you didn't get everything right the first time.
Your younger years may have been filled with responsibilities, disappointments, missed opportunities, and unexpected detours.
But your story is still being written.
There is still room for joy.
Still room for learning.
Still room for meaningful work.
Still room for new friendships, adventures, purpose, and beautiful surprises.
And yes, still room for dreams.
Not every dream will look the way it once did. Some may need to change, and others may need to be released.
But there is something freeing about realizing that your past does not have to determine your entire future.
You can honor the woman you were while making room for the woman you're becoming.
A Little Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for every season of my life, even the ones I don't fully understand.
Forgive me for the times I've allowed regret to steal the joy of today.
Help me release the opportunities I cannot recover and recognize the possibilities still before me.
Give me courage to try again, wisdom to make better decisions, and faith to trust Your timing.
Remind me that my worth has never depended on my accomplishments, my age, or the approval of others.
Guide my next steps, Lord.
And help me live the rest of my life with purpose, gratitude, and hope.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Before You Go, Sis…
I want to leave you with one question:
If fear, age, and other people's opinions were no longer holding you back, what is one thing you would finally give yourself permission to pursue?
Think about it.
Pray about it.
And then consider taking one small step toward it this week.
Because the woman you are today deserves a chance to dream, too.
And if one of those small steps is learning to build an online business from home, I'd love to show you the place that helped me stop chasing every new program and finally stay focused. Click here to see how The Home Business Academy works
